Q&A with Chloe Bruce - The record-breaking stunt performer

In the recent series of BBC's Officially Amazing, martial-arts performer and stunt performer Chloe Bruce (UK) set the record for the Most scorpion kicks in one minute (39).
Chloe Bruce (UK) has starred in some of the biggest blockbusters, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and The Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), but you wouldn’t know it… Here she offers a glimpse into the action-packed, if unsung, life of a stunt double.

How did you first get involved in the stunt industry? Is it what you expected?

I first got into the stunt industry by auditioning to be a part of Disney’s John Carter [2012]. I was used as a special action extra in that and from there I was fortunate enough to meet many people in the industry. I was then asked to join the stunt team on Wrath of the Titans [2012].
It’s exactly what I expected and more. I was already in the industry, but more on the performance side for commercials and music videos, etc. So I knew it would be very similar – i.e. long and tiring days – but what I didn’t expect was some of the best adrenaline experiences ever! I’d always assumed I would get a bigger buzz performing to a live audience, but knowing you are being filmed for a huge movie that will be seen worldwide is just an incredible feeling.

What was it like working with Daisy Ridley?

Working alongside Daisy on The Force Awakens was incredible. She is such a determined and lovely girl. We actually get along really well. She trains super-hard and wants to do as much of the action as she can. She is a dream to work with.

If you had Jedi powers in real life, how would you use them?

I guess I would use them in more practical ways. For instance, if I couldn’t carry something by myself, I could lift it using the Force. I could also use Jedi mind tricks to help the law maybe, by making sure people told the truth.
Chloe Bruce martial arts kicks
Chloe previously held the record for the most martial arts kicks in one minute (one leg) (female) with an incredible 212. However, the current record is held by Yuka Kobayashi with 273.

A lot of movies on your CV are based on sci-fi and comic books – are these preferred genres of yours?

I love watching this kind of action movie, but I think that’s often because I’m either involved with them or know the stunt teams that worked on them. In general, my favourite movies are actually those based on real-life events.

Is there a movie franchise you’d still love to work on?

I’d be really interested in doing a Tomb Raider movie or maybe a Mission Impossible film. There’s great female action in both.

Do you ever get star-struck?

Generally, I don’t. I never like to put people on a pedestal. However, there has been the odd occasion where my inner child has got the better of me. For instance, when I met Jackie Chan and Will Smith together. That was an incredible moment for me as they are both so inspirational.

How did it feel to earn your first Guinness World Records title in 2015 for most scorpion kicks in a minute?

I always thought about being in the Guinness World Records book, but didn’t know if it would ever come to light. So when the opportunity knocked, I had to make it happen. It was one of my greatest achievements to date. It means so much to me.

What are you currently working on?

You can look out for my skills in the new Assassin’s Creed movie [2016]. I had an awesome time working on that. I am currently working on another big movie contract, however I cannot really discuss this at the moment. All I will say is that you will not be disappointed.
