Age: 16

Home country: USA

Special skill: Roller skating

Hey, I’m Mia Peterson and I hold the record for the most people barani flipped over from a quarter pipe on roller skates (female), which is 12. The barani flip is a type of front flip with a half twist – it took me months to nail the landing! 🛼😎

How it started…

When I was younger, I never thought about roller skating or really knew about it. 🤷‍♀️

But then when I was 11, my sister got a pair of roller skates and for her birthday we went to the roller skating rink…

Long story short, by the age of 13 I was completely in love with it! ❤️

Now I compete regularly and some of my very best friends are fellow skaters – we inspire and challenge each other every day. 💪

When I’m not skating, I like to film other people skating, surfing and love listening to my favourite bands. I also love sewing, travelling and going to the beach!

About my first flip...

I would take baby steps until I could land the flip. It is not easy at first though, I would take some tough falls here and there! 😬

After falling, it took a lot of courage to try flips again - but then I remember that falling is just a part of skating and I had to get back up and try again.

I am confident in my attempts, but I always know my limit.

One day my friend Jake suggested that I try to flip over him while he lay on the ground…

I was very careful and, within a few days, I could flip over 9 people in a row! 🤩

I even flipped over my mum. 🤣

Try to find a hobby or sport that you love! Do it because you enjoy it, and the happiness it brings you. If you work hard and put in the hours, you can do anything.

What it's like being a record holder

I used to always look up to the people in the Guinness World Records book when I was younger, and now to be in it…

feels like a dream! 🌈

I first found out while on holiday in Greece with my mum and dad.

They were the first to hear that I had… flipped my way into GWR history.

If you had told me when I was a kid that this would happen, I would have never believed you. 🥹

How to become good at roller skating

I used to practise every day for hours! Now I’m busier, but I still manage to skate a few times a week. 🤓

When I am attempting a flip, I focus on what my next move will be:

1. First, I need to be going at the perfect speed for the flip

2. Then I need to ace the flip

3. Lastly I focus on how I will land

It’s a lot to think about, but after a while it becomes muscle memory! 💡

Never give up! It may seem impossible and really hard at first, but it’s not. If you find a hobby you truly love you will be able to progress very fast in it and every day of that passion will be a win.

My plans for the future

In the future I want to continue skating for fun! 🤪

Although, every once in a while, I think it’d be fun to try and push my limits and attempt another record title on my skates…

So I would probably try and attempt to get the highest flip now.

Since I got the longest flip over people I think it would be awesome to attempt the highest flip too. 😉

I don’t skate for money, I skate for the happiness it gives me. I will definitely continue to skate, even when I go to college and get a profession!
