Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) has broken the record for most goals scored in international soccer matches (male), with a whopping 111 goals in 180 matches. ️⚽️️
He’s scored more goals for his country than most players have for their club team! 🤯️
Ronaldo’s 89th minute equaliser last night (1 September) against the Republic of Ireland made the score 1-1. This was enough to break the record, but Ronaldo didn’t stop there. 😎
Deep into added time, in the 96th minute, Cristiano jumped above all the Irish defenders and scored another header!
His last minute goal meant that Portugal won this important World Cup qualifying match.
The previous top international goalscorer was Ali Daei, the captain of Iran, who scored 109 goals from 1993 to 2006. Ronaldo has been hunting down this record ever since he made his first appearance for Portugal in 2003, at the age of 18. 🏃♂️
During his legendary career, Ronaldo has won lots of trophies, medals, and more importantly, Guinness World Records titles. Here are some of his goalscoring records:
- Most Champions League goals: 134
- Most goals in a UEFA Champions League season by an individual: 17
- Most UEFA European Championships goals by a football (soccer) player: 11
- Most hat-tricks in a UEFA Champions League season: 3
Ronaldo doesn't even have to touch a football to break records. The superstar striker is also a social media sensation...
- Ronaldo has the most followers on Instagram out of everyone in the world, with over 337 million. 📷
- He received the most likes for an athlete on Facebook, with more than 124 million thumbs up. 👍
- He also has the most followers on Twitter for an athlete, with over 94 million. 🐤
That’s a lot of fans! 🤩
Cristiano’s career started with Sporting CP when he was only 12 years old. He rose through the ranks of their youth teams as one of their most talented players ever.
Aged 18, Ronaldo became the most expensive teenager in English football history when Manchester United bought him for £12.24 million. 💰
During his time there, he led United to 3 Premier League titles and 1 Champions League, as well as winning a Ballon d’Or – an award given to the best performing player of the year.
In 2009, Real Madrid emptied the piggy bank and bought Ronaldo for a record £80 million. He only got better and better, winning 4 Champions League trophies and 4 more Ballon d’Or awards. 🏆🏆🏆🏆
In 2016 he finally won his first international trophy, helping Portugal win the UEFA European Championship. ️🥳️
Ronaldo has just completed his return to Manchester United, where he will hope to bang in lots more goals and set more records!
Goal after goal, Ronaldo has won over the hearts of football fans, no matter which team they support.
His latest record only cements his position as one of the greatest footballers to ever grace the pitch. 🐐
And he’s not done yet – there are still lots of chances for Ronaldo to extend his record with the rest of the World Cup qualifiers still to play and the World Cup in Qatar next year. 🌎🏆
Cristiano will be sure to try and score loads of goals in those matches! ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Will anyone ever be able to break his record?
