Are you a fan of flying? ✈️
16-year-old Max Scutchings and his dad David, both from Australia, love flying so much that they broke a world record together!
They achieved the most inside loops performed consecutively in a glider – 45!
🔎A glider is a small, special aeroplane that flies without an engine, using the wind to stay in the air. Wow!
What is even more impressive is that this record hadn’t been broken in over 20 years…
So how did it all start?
Max’s dad, Dave, decided he wanted to attempt breaking a world record for his 50th birthday that was coming up soon.
He has been flying gliders since he was 14 and absolutely LOVES IT, so that’s how they came up with the idea of breaking this record together!
The glider is a twin-seat DG-1000, meaning it has 2 seats, so Dave really wanted Max’s help to do it.
You’re welcome, dad. 😎
Would you like to fly a plane someday? 🧑✈️
Dave grew up to become a pilot, and Max, who started gliding when he was about the same age, hopes to also become a pilot and join the Air Force once he’s done with school.
Max thinks breaking this record will show other kids, just like you, that they can achieve anything they set their mind to!
Do you feel inspired? What’s your biggest dream? 🤩
Super-dad added: “Goal setting, working hard, having discipline and really trying hard is the way to get what you want to achieve.”
Well said, Dave. 💪
He also wants to show kids and teens that flying is “one of the best things you can do in your life”!
Do you agree with him?
But how did they prepare to break the record?
The incredible dad-son duo planned and trained for A WHOLE YEAR before the day of the official attempt.
Hey, we never said record breaking was easy! 😹
So on the day, Dave sat in the back of the glider and Max in the front.
While Dave flew the glider, Max counted the loops, checked the sky around them and kept an eye on how high they were.
The whole time they had their friends and family watching from the ground as they looped around and around in the glider!
What a day to remember. 🥹
And the best part…
Max was the one who landed the glider safely when they’d completed all their loops!
“There were probably about 40 or 50 people watching so there was a lot of pressure,” he confessed.
“The most exciting part of the flight was the landing, coming down knowing we’d broken the record.”
Congratulations, Max and Dave, you are both Officially Amazing! 🥳
Did you know that…
A long time ago, 2 brothers named Wilbur and Orville Wright loved building things.
They started with bicycles but dreamed of flying!
After lots of tries (and a few crashes!), they built the very first aeroplane and flew it for 12 whole seconds in 1903.
It may not sound long, but that tiny flight changed the world…
Forever! ✈️
