Chennai Hoopers

Home country: India

Special skill: Hula hooping

Hi, we are the Chennai Hoopers! A hula hoop might seem like just a (really) fun toy to you, but for us, it’s our biggest passion. It’s also what made us world record breakers! Hula hooping is an exciting sport that energizes and brings out the best in you.🤸🏽‍♀️

It all started when…

Our Chennai Hoopers school was established in 2018 by Vijayalakshmi Saravana.

She is an avid hooper and the world’s best teacher – we love her! 😍

It started with just a handful of students being taught in a small room…

And has since grown into a full-blown academy that has now trained more than 500 children! 🏃‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️

Today, there are about 75 students who regularly meet to exercise and have fun with hoops, both in person and online.

We always have the best time!

Hooping is a journey of self improvement that enables you to set personal goals and witness progress over time.

Our journey of record breaking

In 2019, our classmate Tharun was the first Chennai Hooper to break a world record…

He achieved the most times to spin a hoop around the knees in one minute – 194!

Since then, we’ve broken about 30 records in total – pretty impressive, right? 😎

In 2023, 3 of us were invited to GWR’s London office to demonstrate our talent and break more records in person!

Balasaranitha Balaji, Janani Saravana (the teacher’s daughter) and Mamathi Vinoth flew to London and SMASHED an incredible 9 titles.

Just to name a few, Bala did the most rotations around the shoulders in 30 seconds (53), Janani the most elbow passes in one minute (46) and Mamathi the most hops while spinning a hoop on the ankle in one minute (110)!

Being a hula hooper

At Chennai Hoopers, we don’t only learn, we teach too! 🤓

When you’re qualified as a “senior”, you’re given the chance to teach the younger kids.

We feel like this is really useful as well as fun, as it not only helps in developing our teaching skills but also gets us out of our comfort zone.

Of course, breaking world records is also a HUGE confidence boost and pushes us to achieve even more. 💪

My mum is my hooping hero. She runs Chennai Hoopers and was my inspiration from the start!

Our advice & our dream

We’ve been learning and teaching hula hooping for years, and as teachers, one thing we see a lot with beginners is that they get frustrated after trying for just a few minutes.

So, our top tip is to just have patience!

It takes some time, but once you get it, that’s when the real fun begins. 😉

Our dream?

To one day compete in the Olympic Games! ✨

What it's like breaking world records together

Breaking world records is an awesome experience. 🥹

I think most (if not all) of us will always be hoopers… We just love it so much. ❤️

It brings us so much joy and fun that we can’t see ourselves giving up on it anytime soon.

Plus, it brings us closer together and we feel like a big family!
