Are you into gymnastics? 🤸♀️
Chelsea Werner from USA is a multiple-time world champion, model, record holder, and overall an absolute powerhouse!
Chelsea has Down syndrome. 🔎It's a chromosomal disorder: most people have 46 chromosomes, but people with Down syndrome are born with one extra copy of their 21st chromosome.
And what are chromosomes?
Well, think of them like special “puzzle pieces” that help make you who you are. They decide things like the colour of your eyes, if your hair is curly or straight, and maybe even what your favourite ice cream flavours are!
People with Down syndrome have an extra “puzzle piece,” which means they might look, learn, and grow a little differently than others.
But they can still live happy, fun, and full lives, just like everyone else. 😊
Take Chelsea, for example – at such a young age, she has achieved more than others dream of doing in their lifetimes!
She is a 4-time United States Special Olympics gymnastics champion and 3-time world champion. 🤯
Now, she has also broken 4 world records:
What a legend!
Chelsea is super proud to be a Guinness World Records title holder, as is everyone around her:
“They never thought they would know someone that actually set a record – let alone 4 Guinness World Records titles,” she told us.
Chelsea has been a gymnast her whole life…
Even though the doctors told her that she would always suffer from low muscle tone, she defied their expectations and took on Special Olympics gymnastics when she was only 8! 💪
"I became very confident and was at my best under pressure. [...] I think that confidence and work ethic have helped me in all areas of my life," she explained.
Take Chelsea’s example and believe in yourself - you are capable of amazing things, and confidence is the key to unlocking your full potential!
Another cool fact about Chelsea is that, when she’s not at the gym, she works as a model too!
She's incredibly successful at showing the world that we're all beautiful, no matter how different we may look. ✨
Her favourite part about being a record-breaking gymnast?
“I love that I can inspire people to reach for their dreams,” she told us.
“It’s very rewarding to see young girls with disabilities doing gymnastics because of my influence.”
"I loved the social aspect and being part of a team," she added cheerfully. "And I really loved it when I started competing and the crowd cheered for me."
Due to her syndrome, it often takes Chelsea longer than most people to learn new skills and some aspects of the sport are harder for her…
However, she makes up for it with her huge love for the sport and her super confidence!
With hard work and trust in yourself, you can do anything. 🤩
Congratulations, Chelsea, and welcome to the Guinness World Records family!
We cannot wait to see what you will achieve next. 😎
