It’s spooky season – time to hang garlic around your windows and keep the night light on… just in case!

Halloween can be as fun as it can be frightening, but the good news is that you can choose to celebrate with some of the coolest – and record-breaking – videogames out there.

In fact, did you know that there’s a rich history of horror running through gaming culture?

Some people say that the first horror game is the Haunted House on the Magnavox Odyssey, which holds the world record of being the first ever videogame console.

Since the Haunted House was released in 1972… can you calculate how old it is?!

The Odyssey wasn’t very impressive as the technology wasn’t advanced back then, but it was definitely spooky!

Other influential horror games followed in the next decades, and another classic game that was directly influenced by Halloween is Grim Fandango (LucasArts, 1998), the first LucasArts adventure game to use 3D graphics.

It’s set in the Land of the Dead, where everyone looks like calacas – colourful skeletons that people use to decorate during Day of the Dead celebrations!

Today, horror games are super popular, with some of the biggest stories and movies becoming the main stars of that type of games…

For example, Luigi’s Mansion 3 (Nintendo, 2019) sees the taller Mario brother rescue his friends from a very haunted building – and it is the best-selling Luigi videogame of all time!

Some other fun and spooky examples are The Five Nights At Freddy’s series of jumpscare horror games, which began with the first Five Nights At Freddy’s (Scott Cawthon) in 2014, and has the record for the most videogame sequels released in a year.

WOW!

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, 3, and 4 all came out within a year because the games were super popular with streamers and easy to make.

Since then, the series has grown into more games, books, and even movies!

Have you ever played any of these games?
