If you’ve been a fan of Guinness World Records for a while, then it is time we finally answer some questions you may have about us.

For example, when did our first ever book come out, and why? How many world record titles are there? How many Adjudicators?

These and many more fun facts will be revealed in this story, so keep reading…

How did Guinness World Records begin?

first book

The famous book about amazing records from all around the globe started as a simple idea to help people answer questions and settle friendly – or more heated – arguments.

The idea began in the early 1950s when a man named Sir Hugh Beaver ran the Guinness Brewery – the place that makes the world-famous Guinness beer. One day, he went to a party in Ireland and, while he was there, he and his friends got into an argument about which game bird could fly the fastest in Europe.

They looked for the answer in books, but couldn't find it anywhere!

So later, Sir Hugh came up with the idea of making a book full of interesting facts that could answer questions just like this.

He asked 2 twin brothers, named Norris and Ross McWhirter, to help him – here they are!

The brothers were really good at finding facts and information and, together, they created our very first book.

And that's how the Guinness World Records book was born… all because of one question about a bird!

Oh, by the way, the answer is the red-breasted merganser.

When did it begin?

Our first ever book was officially published on 27 August 1955 – can you do the maths to figure out how old Guinness World Records is?

Pretty iconic, right?

How many world record titles are there?

That’s a great question!

While we can’t give you a specific number, since new record titles are being created every day, there are well over 70,000 official record titles.

Would you have guessed such a high number?!

How many Adjudicators are there?

Instantly recognizable all over the world, the Official Adjudicator is the ultimate symbol of the Guinness World Records brand.

They are the ones who verify and reveal if you’ve successfully broken a record or not!

But how many are there around the world?
