Happy National Burger Day!

Every year on 28 May, we celebrate one of the world’s most delicious meals ever invented – the burger, of course.

This dish is so popular, that it has broken world records all around the globe…

From the most expensive to the largest, and a few more in between, take a bite out of these amazing burger-themed records.

Most expensive

How much do you think the world’s most expensive hamburger costs?

We’ll let you think about it…

Think…

Okay, what’s your guess?

The answer is: €5,000 (£4,295 / $5,967)!

Are you surprised?

The Daltons restaurant in Voorthuizen, Netherlands, added a regular-sized portion of burger to their menu in 2021 that cost this much! Named "The Golden Boy", and crafted by chef Robbert Jan De Veen, this burger is truly spectacular: the bun is wrapped in gold leaf, the dough is champagne-infused and, nestling between the buns, is a patty of Japanese Wagyu brisket and chuck short rib.

Would you order this burger?

Largest

Did you know that the "hamburger" is so named NOT because it's made with ham but because it was invented in the German city of Hamburg?

In fact, the original Hamburger was just a patty of ground beef seasoned with herbs and spices. Later on, American chefs began serving up the Hamburger-style beef as a sandwich, and the burger as we know it was born!

So, to promote Germany as the home of the burger, six German chefs - Wolfgang Leeb, Tom Reicheneder, Rudi Dietl, Josef Zellner, Hans Maurer and Christian Dischinger - prepared the largest hamburger in 2017.

The final cooked triple-decker weighed 1,164.2 kg (2,566 lb 9 oz), which is about the same as an adult walrus, or 10 large refrigerators if you've got no idea of just how big a walrus is.

American collector "Hamburger Harry" Sperl rides his Hamburger Harley (wearing his Hamburger helmet) and has amassed the largest collection of hamburger memorabilia - a bun-believable 3,724 unique items!

Most eaten in a lifetime

The man who holds the record for most Big MacⓇ burgers eaten in a lifetime has now eaten more than 35,000 since having his first one over 50 years ago.

And his advice to future record breakers? “Don’t try it.”

(Seriously, DO NOT attempt this record. Maybe try some healthier record instead?)

Donald Gorske, of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, USA, says he eats 2 a day, one for lunch and one for dinner…

Well, eating 2 burgers every single day would be boring for most people, but perhaps you can have just one this week to celebrate!
