This is how Tommy solves puzzle cubes within seconds, even while BLINDFOLDED

Have you ever tried to solve a rotating puzzle cube?

For the average person, it can take hours – if not days – to figure out how to get all the coloured tiles to match up…

But after years of practice, Tommy Cherry, a student from USA, is an expert puzzle cube solver who even specialises in doing it whilst blindfolded!

You know how they say that when you’re really good at something you can do it with your eyes closed? Well, that’s Tommy with speedcubing (the sport of solving a cube as fast as possible).

In fact, Tommy recently claimed the Guinness World Records title for fastest time to solve a 3x3x3 rotating puzzle cube while blindfolded again, and he managed to achieve it in a jaw-dropping 11.56 seconds.

Pretty impressive, right? What if we told you this isn’t his first time breaking this particular record?

Tommy claimed the title for the first time in 2021, when he set a time of 15.27 seconds. Since then, he has continued to break his own Guinness World Records title almost every year – it’s like a super cool tradition!

Fun fact: another amazing cube solver, Charlie Eggins from Australia, has taken the record from Tommy a few times. Tommy and Charlie actually share the Guinness World Records title for fastest average time to solve a 3x3x3 rotating puzzle cube while blindfolded, which was completed by both in 14.05 seconds.

Tommy is a 21-year-old student who spends time on the side coaching others to solve cubes like him. He even has his own business, the Tommy Cherry Coaching Company, about which he said: “It's for beginners and pros alike - anyone can learn cubing!”

Does cube solving sound fun? You can learn at any age!

The very first time Tommy solved a puzzle cube was in 2015 when he was only around 11 years old. He learned – you guessed it – from a YouTube tutorial. 

So this is how he does it: practice, research, and more practice!

Tommy can, of course, solve a cube without a blindfold, in an average time of just 7 seconds, and his best ever time was an incredible 4.53 seconds. 

Tommy explained: “I gradually got faster over time and eventually made major breakthroughs in my improvement. Throughout a large portion of my competitive cubing career, I focused on getting as fast as possible in as many events as possible, but I ultimately ended up excelling most in blindfolded.

“[…] I've pushed myself to get better and better ever since. This most recent record of mine is my first one since 2024, so I am ecstatic to finally improve again and hope to keep it going for as long as I can!”

Working hard on yourself and trying to get better and better at school, a sport or your favourite hobby, is the best way to achieve your dreams!

Tommy has also experimented with different ways of solving puzzle cubes, and he can even do it with his feet! “I've also solved the cube with one foot (assisted by an object I was pushing the cube up against), blindfolded with one hand, and even blindfolded with my feet,” he told us.

He also loves to do cool random challenges with some other blindfolded speed cubing friends, such as ‘team blindfolded’ where one person is blindfolded and solving the cube (without a chance to ever look at it), and the other person has to instruct them on how to solve it.
