Meet Wain, the world’s oldest wombat ever! He is 34 and thriving. 😎
More specifically, he was rescued from his mother’s pouch after a car accident in November 1989 - therefore, he is at least 34 years 100 days old.
Wombats are cute, clever Aussie creatures that typically live for 5-15 years in the wild, whereas in a protected environment they can live for a little over 20 years... except for Wain!
“He is a miraculous wombat,” Kozo Sejima, the director of Satsukiyama Zoo in Ikeda, Japan, told us.
According to him, Wain has lived this long because he lives a very low-stress life: “He sleeps when he wants to sleep and eats when he wants to eat.”
That's the dream, right?! 😩
Wain lives with 3 other wombats: an 18-year-old boy named Fuku and a pair named Kou and Yuki, both aged 7.
What a gang!
So what does a typical day in Wain's life look like?
Usually Wain wakes up in the morning, eats breakfast, walks around the field, naps under the sun, then gets up again for more food and an evening walk! Not bad, huh? ☀️
He eats quite healthily, with his breakfast consisting of grass and sweet potatoes, and for dinner, he eats grass, sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkins and apples. 🥕🍎
You know what they say... an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
People working at the zoo say that Wain is very sociable and enjoys coming to see them when they are around.
We love seeing Wain happy!
