Fun facts
- The word “Pokémon” derives from the words “Pocket” and “Monsters.” If you think about it, that’s what Pokémons are – little pocket-sized creatures that you can train and play with!
- There are over 1,000 different Pokémon species. What’s truly amazing is that each and every one of them has its own unique combination of skills and powers.
- The most popular Pokémon is Greninja. The blue, frog-like monster that can move with the speed and agility of a ninja, was voted as the most popular Pokémon in June 2016. Surprisingly, Pikachu was ranked 4th!
- The first Pokémon ever created is Rhydon. He is an adorable, rhino-like monster. 🦏
- Pokémon was firstly a videogame, created in 1996. In fact, the anime was originally meant just to promote the game!
Pokémon world records
- The world’s largest Pokémon card collection belongs to 2 Danish brothers, Jens Ishøy Prehn and Per Ishøy Nielsen, after collecting for over 20 years! 🤯
As they told us: "The motto of Pokémon is 'Gotta catch 'em all' and we took that to heart, trying to get one of each card."
Seeing as they currently own a collection of over 32,809 different cards, they must be getting pretty close, don’t you think?!
From the first introduction of Pokémon in Denmark, the brothers were blown away with the magical pocket-sized monsters that were cute, strong and cool all at the same time, so they started collecting.
And the rest… is history.
- Another record-breaking collection is the largest collection of Pokémon memorabilia, owned by Lisa Courtney from the UK.
With 17,127 items when last verified in 2016, Lisa is truly the queen of collecting! 👑
Her collection includes items from the UK, USA, France, and of course, Japan – she has even travelled to Japan, more than once, for the specific purpose of collecting Pokémon objects.
